Starving (for) Artists

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.
— Pablo Picasso

The silence was deafening. And, disturbing.

I had asked a room of 30 high school students to share what their artistic gift was; painting, drawing, writing, crafting, etc.

Not one voice or hand was raised. I pressed into the moment. “Wait, doesn’t anyone here feel they have an artistic or creative bone in their body?” They looked around at each other hoping someone, just one classmate, would answer the bell. But, no.

Somewhere along the way, perhaps you also were led to believe that following your creative passions or tapping into your artsy-fartsy self was irresponsible and wouldn’t pay the bills. So now you work. A lot. And your artistic gift which was designed to delight God and people … got shelved.

It’s not supposed to be this way.

I attended the musical, “Bye Bye Birdie” a few years ago to support and witness a wonderful friend of mine dance and sing like nobody’s business. Gosh she was grand.

Her grace, riveting appeal and uncommon talent brought the entire audience to its feet and to another place in time. And we all wanted to stay in that place. It felt right.

I was reminded just how uniquely gifted people are and the important impact their gift can have on others. Because I can’t dance all that well, I love to see it on display.

I also can’t weld, code, crochet, design, build, paint, landscape, play piano or throw pottery. But YOU can.

You are an artist. Don’t grow up just yet.

There are 525,600 minutes in a calendar year (don’t do the math, just watch the “Seasons of Love” video below). Then, spend more minutes this year on your art form and giftedness than you did last year. The world will thank you for it.
