Failing Successfully
“The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”
This 60-second video below sets up what I want to share with you today. Click and watch until the very end. (yes, mom … I wish he was wearing a helmet. But he lived, it’s all good.)
Most of what we see in life is rehearsed. Actors, musicians, politicians, athletes, and speakers spend painstaking amounts of time to show us the best they’ve got. Michael Bublé sang an awful lot in the shower before he stepped onto the stage at Madison Square Garden.
This kid gets it. Most people would choose to only show the successful trick, landing on the second skateboard. He includes wipeout after wipeout in his finished video because he knows that behind each successful landing, there are many attempts. No reason to hide it.
Success is the shiny end product of a whole lotta practice, perseverance and untold amounts of failure. Good job, fella!
My “behind-the-scenes” life is strewn with missteps, shortcomings, and failures. But that doesn’t stop me. Failing has become a surprisingly successful superpower of mine.
If you aren’t open and honest about your failures, those watching you will never have the courage to try, fall down, and try again.
People don’t expect you to “kill it” every time. Chill, dude.
